x marks the spot

Last night we had Parent - Teacher Conferences at the pirates' school. I love those things... I always have. (I used to look forward to them when I was little.) But now I look forward to them because it's a peek into my pirates' worlds. They show me their artwork, their friend's artwork, their school (through their eyes) and, I get to hear their teachers sing their praises. My favorite part is watching their little eyes light up. They look back and forth, between the teacher and I: they catch my eyes, they look back to their teacher, and they look back at me to see how I'm reacting to whatever she said. It's always been chance to squeeze their shoulders or pat them on the back, ogle their test scores, and wholeheartedly agree with everything good their teacher has to say. I know school won't always come as easy as it does now. But these moments are so fun to treasure.

Plus, it's fun walking out of the school together. In that moment I feel like a genuine, bonafide parent...

  1. You are so cool Christine. Yesterday I walked past the tissues aisle in Kroger and I got knots in my stomach. I remember forgetting to buy those tissues almost every year. I remember feeling so panicked that I wouldn't get my 5 points for tissues, and my teacher would be sad... Oh the shame! To be honest, I'm a little afraid of becoming a parent. Its a big responsibility, and I don't know if I can do it right. I'm glad children come as babies, but even so... can I take care of a baby?
