I have so many good intentions and swell ideas...

But with two school pick-up times, a newborn baby, odd sleeping hours, and really cold weather... I'm beginning to wonder if I will ever actually finish any of them.

Today Steve called at the precise moment I was hitting a sleep-deprived low. "Steve," I said, "I'm terribly useless." He gave an empathetic response, which I took as a cue to elaborate. "I can't get anything done, and whatever I do get done, is completely undone by the next day." He continued to listen - so I kept marching down my list of complaints. (He's a saint.) Sleep deprivation does a number on me.

But the afternoon passed. And I survived. I did two school pickups. A whole bunch of shuffling around. A dinner. A power nap. And then off to evening activities. I got home just in time to kiss the pirates goodnight. The kitchen was a disaster... but their homework was done. They were showered and fresh, and tucked in their beds, ready for Thursday to start.

It wasn't anything like I'd planned. But it was still good. Amen.

  1. You're doing swell. I had such a hard time adjusting to the new "us" and fought it tooth and nail for awhile. Your posts of what mothering is really about help me to stay grounded and ignore the dishes and laundry when more important things surround me. It won't always be so nuts.
