I love holidays.
But the small, insignificant, and often overlooked holidays?...
Awesome.
Take Columbus Day, for example.

With no work, and the grocery shopping done,
we put the pirates in the car and drove for two hours.
 We ended up in Natchitoches.
Steve had never been before, and the pirates were happy to show him around.
And even though it had been five months,
Robs practically gave the tour of Oakland Plantation.

She was perched on Steve's shoulders pointing out things like,
"that's where the horses lived"
or, "that's where the birds lived"
or, "that's where Mommy sat and fed Squísh."

Details don't escape her.

But sometimes they do me.
Right afterwards I stepped on a giant anthill,
and it made my legs itch for a half an hour.

And then we drove back to the river.
We ate lunch while throwing french fries to the ducks
and I thought about Steel Magnolias.

On the drive home Steve and I ate almost a whole package of Berry Burst Oreo's.
(There was barely any help from the pirates.)
Which I find disgusting,
but they were deeeeeelicious.
And they went well with the conversation.

I'm hoping OREO keeps them shelved right next to those mint ones.

Happy Belated Columbus Day!
