drawing lines.

My mom left last Thursday.
It was a sad day in the history of Louisiana...
But she left us with an Oasis for a backyard.

And on Saturday, when Robs took a one giant backwards spill off the trampoline,
she informed me (after calming down) that
the grass wasn't nearly as poky as before.

Thank you Mama.
(And please forgive me for posting a picture of your pajama pants.)
I could not resist.

Thanks to everyone who left a bit o' wisdom on the last post...
...and everyone who even thought about it.
(I'll take your thoughts too...)

The school debate continues.
I was almost 97% sure I was going to send Robs to school.
She really wants to go...

(But the honest truth is that it was really more like 50/50...
I'm rounding up to 97 just for the sake of the tale.)

And then Memorial Day came along.

It was a great day.
We swam in a great pool with some great friends.
I took great photos of even more great friends...
And we had a great conversation with a great educator...
who happens to teach locally.
...In our great corner of the universe.

And he said he'd homeschool before he sending
a sweet li'l thing like Robs to the school
for which we are gerrymandered.

And in that little conversation-
my brain was turned upside down and the
contents were emptied for re-organization.

What has happened?
When did kindergarten start serving a mandatory
breakfast AND lunch...
AND afternoon nap?
(On a mat, mind you... on the FLOOR... not tucked snugly under covers...)

When was it decided that all day Preschools and Daycares
do a better job of educating young ones than their own mothers or fathers?

When did parents give up any or all of that responsibility?
...and Why?

Louisiana has been good for me...
I've never before had to (so) firmly decide on what I actually believe.
I've been asked all sorts of nosy questions.
I've been challenged both overt and covert.
I've been judged, sometimes fitting or sometimes not.
I've also squashed a million bugs.
And I think of it as one giant ...test.

But I will draw the line when it comes to my pirates.

And I will spend the summer in my Oasis...
contemplating where exactly, to draw my line.

And with what? Chalk?
Permanent Marker?
A new lease? A new job?

The options are endless.

I am confident I'll find it.
I am confident it will be perfect.

(I will still welcome any and all advice.)

  1. Hey Kristine..I love your posts...They are all so artfully done. :)
I was reading through LDS Living the other day and thought of you--They had an ad for k12 and I have been looking at their site online...I don't know anyone who has personally had experience with this program, but I like that a lot of the curriculum answers would be met...Good luck with you decision!

  2. Sounds like your local school is catering to the needs of the majority. We quite a few families in our school (happy little herriman) that would definitely benefit from breakfast and lunch and a little discipline. They come to school hungry and have some serious behavior problems...

promlem is, you are not like the majority of your neighbors and cute Robs does not need those things as you are home, feeding, loving, caring and doing a great job as parents.

How did you feel about the kindergarten teachers? Can you request a specific one?

If you can find a group of homeschoolers in your area where she has some interaction with other children, that would be great.

Like everyone else says, "mom knows best" especially when you pray like crazy and do what the spirit tells you to do. :)

Good luck. this too will pass! You guys are there for a reason and when that reason is done, the Lord will help you move on to the next place in your lives. Love you! (and happy late birthday. Not sure how I missed that)
