God Gave Us Families

Last Thursday I woke up at twelve minutes after six... and ohhhhhhh I knew something terrible was coming. I absolutely despise being sick, so I tried to convince myself it was in my head. I heard Steve's alarm go off three minutes later. I heard him get ready for the day. I was still trying to convince myself, but it wasn't working - so before he left, I asked him to keep his phone on loud, because I might need him. (I lasted all of an hour by my sick self - and then called him several times after that to find out when he could come home.) At eleven o' clock I heard him come through the front door, like a sweet angel of mercy. And then I stopped trying to convince myself it would pass. For the next three days this darling of mine fed, cared for, and entertained our pirates all by his lonesome. He emptied buckets into toilets, he washed and folded loads and loads of laundry, he refilled my water bottle, he brought electrolyted drinks. He listened when I told him my fever-induced stress dreams, he played several games of chess with Erik, and he made me laugh at least three times more than several times. I listened to our pirates toss him all sorts of cabin-fever antics - but he never complained. Not. Even. Once.

He's a superhero. With mountains of quiet character he would never admit having. It was a very difficult couple of days. We didn't sleep. We didn't eat. We didn't do much of anything. And the situation was so yuck... but on Sunday night all the usual busy-ness of our life had faded away and we had only what was real. I was left with four extremely clear thoughts:

I am so grateful for Steve.

I'm so grateful for my pirates. I'm so grateful for good health. And I'm so grateful for our God. (He gave us families for an eternity of reasons - but this weekend was definitely one of them.) Happy Monday!

  1. I love that description of him: "mountains of quiet character". He is one of the very best men I know (and I'm not just saying that because he is my brother). There's a reason that he's everyone's favorite!!! Love you Stevie G. And we love all of you who love him too!! ;)

  3. We love Steve! He is an excellent man, husband, father, brother-in-law, listener, friend, etc., etc., etc. And you both complement each other so well!

  4. also, Husbands are the best. I had a really uncomfortable night last night and I remember elbowing Quentin's face at least twice.
