wednesday's dodgeball from heaven

On Tuesday, Squísh, Em and I went shopping at the dollar store. (In the (almost) three years we've lived here, I've been in that store a grand total of once - now twice) We were trying to purchase bouncy balls for a game of dodgeball I had planned with the young women for Wednesday. I held Em in my arms and Squísh wandered beside me. After circling the entire store twice, I found one measly bouncy ball. We headed for the door empty handed, until I spotted four BOXES OF THEM, lined in a row along the storefront windows. They couldn't have been in a better hiding spot. I grabbed a cart, put Em in the back (so she wouldn't taste the cart handle) and Squísh and I picked out twenty of the best bouncy balls. It was a wild success.

But the rest of Tuesday seemed to rocket downhill. We had temper tantrums and arguments. I had steam coming out of my ears at least twice... (these poor pirates of mine.) And Wednesday, although better, was still a challenge. By the time seven o' clock rolled around, I couldn't leave for that game of dodgeball quick enough. I grabbed the bag of bouncy balls and tossed my family an I-love-you-but-I-must-go kind of goodbye and flew out the door.

Dodgeball was so fun.

I love mothering. I love my family more than anything else on this glorious green earth. But goodness, gracious, it can be challenging. Laughing with a group of teenage girls on a Wednesday night, and throwing bouncy balls as far and as fast as I could... it was therapeutic.

And when I came home my pirates were cute, once again.

  1. Dodgeball is so fun! I loved being in Young Women's in Michigan. Those girls made me feel young and old at the same time :) And it's nice to hear about other mom's having those kinds of days. I got so frustrated with Wesley the other night at bedtime after a long and stressful day with a fussy baby, etc. and I went to bed feeling so bad. The next morning he greeted me with a big hug and kiss. Kids are amazingly forgiving!! It's so nice to get away sometimes and come back refreshed. Being a mom is the best thing in the world, but so very hard at times. I don't like to tell myself it's going to be even harder when they are all teenagers. I think I'm happy to stick with little kid problems for now! :)
